ADAPTED FROM THE TRLA PRESS CENTER
Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) has opened a new office dedicated to helping low-income residents of west Texas with their civil legal needs. Located in Alpine, the office will serve Brewster, Presidio, Jeff Davis, Reeves, Pecos, Culberson, and Hudspeth counties.
The new office acts as a complement to TRLA’s office in El Paso in serving the west Texas community. TRLA helps low-income residents with legal problems related to more than thirty-nine different areas including divorce, child custody, housing, taxes, employment, and civil rights. TRLA’s services are free and available to clients who meet income-based eligibility guidelines.
According to TRLA Executive Director David Hall, “TRLA has always had a sincere commitment to serving the people
of west Texas. Our new office will give the Trans-Pecos community area easier access to fighting for justice and navigating the legal system.”
Approximately twenty percent of families in west Texas live below the poverty line. With the current economic crisis and thousands of people losing their jobs everyday, that number will only increase throughout 2009. With some attorneys charging more than $200 an hour for legal help, TRLA is often the only place that low-income Texans can turn to for help with their legal needs.
Residents living in the Alpine area have always been able to apply for free legal services by calling TRLA’s toll-free hotline at 1-888-988-9996. With the opening of the new office, residents will now be able to schedule appointments with the Alpine staff to review their legal issues. The office can be reached at 432.837.1199.
Added Hall, “The need to serve west Texas has never been greater. Our new office will go a long way towards our efforts to increase access to justice for low-income Texans.”
