More than twenty-five years after it first opened on south Closner, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) officially re-opened and dedicated our Edinburg office in March.
The re-opening came after months of renovations that doubled the work area available for staff, upgraded the office plumbing, and redesigned the waiting room. New furniture for the office was donated by TRLA board members Lisa Taylor and Roger Reed.
“The new renovations allow us to serve our clients more easily and effectively,” said TRLA attorney and Edinburg branch manager Pablo Almaguer. “The months of construction were definitely worth the wait.”
As part of the re-opening the office was dedicated to John Cook, a former TRLA employee and branch manager who dedicated his career to poverty law. Cook passed away in 2005 after a long battle with cancer. He had been working with TRLA since 1976.
Added Almaguer, “John was always a source of inspiration and encouragement in the fight for low-income clients. His legacy will remain an influence in TRLA’s work and this office will serve as a reminder of his dedication to our cause.”
Even with all the new additions, the office is still in need of improvements to the waiting area for clients. Office staff will be holding a fundraiser to help with the remaining expenses.
