Each year more than 25000 youth are homeless in San Antonio. As one of the only legal service organizations to provide support to this population, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) was recently awarded funding to develop a new project specifically for homeless youth in Bexar County.
The goal of the project, the Street Youth Project, is to empower homeless youth by educating them about their legal rights. Staffed by two TRLA staff members, an attorney and a social worker, the project uses outreach, mentoring, and partnerships with social service agencies to reach vulnerable youth living on the streets of San Antonio.
The project began in the fall of 2009 and aims to help youth obtain identification and CPS documents, public benefits, and housing as well as to dismiss minor misdemeanor charges that can be barriers to their success.
Although funding for the project ends in August, TRLA hopes to raise the funds to continue its success and possibly expand the project to other urban areas.
