Celebrate Pro Bono – A Message from TRLA Executive Director David Hall

TRLA Executive Director David Hall

On behalf of Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA), we are proud to join the American Bar Association in recognizing the National Pro Bono Celebration and the numerous private attorneys who selflessly join us in securing access to justice for the poor.

In Texas there is only one legal aid attorney for every 12,000 low-income residents facing legal issues. Everyday we meet families on the verge of losing their homes to foreclosure, mothers and children trying to escape their abusers, and people struggling to put food on the table and pay their bills. We wish we could help them all, but the demand for our work is far greater than we can meet. Last year alone, TRLA had to turn away more than 23,000 people in need simply because we did not have the resources to help.

That’s why the work of pro bono attorneys is so critical to ensuring the doors of justice are open to all Texans, regardless of their income. It would be impossible to meet the legal needs of low-income Texans without the help of the private bar.

To the numerous private attorneys who have donated thousands of hours of free legal services to helping our clients, thank you. Without you, many low-income Texans would be denied the support they need to handle their legal issues and fight for themselves and their families.  And for those of you looking for an opportunity to donate your time, please consider joining Texas RioGrande Legal Aid in our fight for access to justice. For more information on pro bono opportunities near you, visit us online at http://www.trla.org.

TRLA will be holding several events over the next few days to recognize Celebrate Pro Bono Week. We invite you to join us in our celebration and as we continue to fight on behalf of the poor.

It is only with your help that we can ensure that low-income Texans have the access to justice they rightly deserve.
