The Coastal Bend Community Foundation has awarded a grant in the amount of $2500 to Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) in support of legal services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
The award will help fund the work of TRLA’s Legal Alliance for Survivors of Abuse (LASA) Project. The LASA Project aims to establish relationships between domestic violence shelters and TRLA to ensure that victims have immediate access to legal help when leaving their abusers.
“Easy access to the legal system is an important tool in helping victims of domestic violence and sexual assault,” said TRLA attorney and director of the LASA Project Maricarmen Garza. “Particularly in the Coastal Bend area, this assistance can mean the difference between life and death.”
The support of the Coastal Bend Community Foundation will help enhance the relationship between TRLA’s LASA Project and the Women’s Shelter of South Texas, a Corpus Christi nonprofit organization that helps residents affected by family violence and sexual assault. In addition to providing legal services for victims, the LASA Project also provides training and technical support to the shelter.
Added Garza, “The support of the Coastal Bend Community Foundation ensures that victims will continue to receive the support they need to leave their abusers and rebuild their lives.”
