Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA)’s San Antonio pro bono program — the Community Justice Program — was honored with the 2012 Harrison Tweed Award from the American Bar Association last week.

The San Antonio Community Justice Program, a collaboration between the San Antonio Bar Association and TRLA, offers free legal clinics for low-income Texans in the San Antonio area. The clinics are held multiple times each month.

CJP representatives, including TRLA’s Ann Zaragoza, accepted the award on Friday at the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago. The CJP was honored alongside the San Mateo County Bar Association for its Private Defender Program.

According to the American Bar Association, the Harrison Tweed Award was created in 1956 to recognize the extraordinary achievements of state and local bar associations that develop or significantly expand projects or programs to increase access to civil legal services for poor persons or criminal defense services for indigents.
