Taken Across the Border

Jo Ann was living a happy life. She had a great fiancé and three wonderful children. The difficult life she had led several years before seemed to be a distant memory. But not for long.

One day Jo Ann dropped off her oldest child at his father’s house for a week-long visit. But at the end of the week, the child and his father were nowhere to be found. Jo Ann was afraid. Her child’s father had family in Mexico and crossing the border would not be difficult. If that happened, she had no idea how she would find them.

Not knowing what to do, she turned to Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) for help.

TRLA helped Jo Ann work with law enforcement and relatives to find out where the child was and to confirm that he was ok. TRLA also helped Jo Ann prepare all the legal documents necessary to prove that she had legal custody and a child support order. Finally, with the help of local law enforcement, TRLA helped arrange a reunion between Jo Ann and her son. Today, Jo Ann continues to live in San Antonio with her new husband and three children.
