Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) has partnered with the Bastrop County Bar Association and Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas (VLS) to begin providing free monthly legal advice clinics to Bastrop-area residents.
The clinics will be held on the first Tuesday of each month during the school year. The first clinic will take place tonight, January 5th, from 4:15 to 6pm in the library of the Bastrop Intermediate School. Participants must sign in by 6pm to speak with an attorney.
The clinics allow the public to seek legal advice on issues such as divorce, foreclosure, benefits, wills, bankruptcy, and landlord/tenant disputes. Criminal matters will not be reviewed. Services will be provided by volunteer lawyers from the Bastrop County Bar Association, TRLA, and VLS.
“For many in our community, the cost of hiring an attorney is prohibitive,” notes District Court Judge Christopher Duggan. “The value of these free legal clinics is that a person has the opportunity to ask a lawyer a legal question one-on-one and get valuable direction on the merits of a case and possible next steps. ”
Individuals unable to attend tonight’s clinic can also seek legal assistance by calling TRLA at 1-888-988-9996 or attending one of the weekly legal clinics in Austin.
